We have had the Leeds Arts Party event and it was brilliant!! Everything went really well, there were enough people to join in with the community workshops, the speakers were really good and it was just the right amount of time. I can’t believe we actually managed to pull the event off considering this only started from an informal conversation in the Vis Com studio!

Demo for Arts Education
The demo for the Art Party didn’t exactly go as planned as it was pouring with rain and literally nobody was free due to working towards deadlines! We decided that we would just do it anyway as a sort of advertising event for the Leeds Arts Party Event. The banner looked really good and we managed to get a couple of good photos! I think next time we’ll really have to plan it more in advance and promote it a bit more!

Thinking more about Demo
We went to talk to the SU about what we would need to do if we wanted to do a Demo from Blenheim Walk to Vernon St. Turns out its going to be quite a hassle to do so and would have to heavily involve the police. We have decided instead to just invite people to collate in Millenium Square. They can then make their own way there so we don’t have to involve the police.
We were also given a massive piece of material to create our main banner. We will probably use this demo as more of an advertisement and a promotional event for the Leeds Arts Party as we have very little physical promotional material. We thought we would put the event date and time on the main banner to create promotion of the event.

Leeds Arts Party: Choosing Community Workshops and Art Market Stalls
We had a day where we went through all the people/groups/organisations that had applied for both the art market stalls and choosing the community workshops. It was actually a lot harder than I thought it would be as there were a lot of great stall and workshop ideas. We tried to make both the arts market and the community workshops as varied as possible and choose the people who weren’t asking for too much money!

Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to prepare properly and I think this really affected my presentation! I realised that it takes more than a day to prepare because I need to practise presenting it. I missed out a lot of things that would have been better to talk about rather than what I actually ended up doing. I also realised that I really need to improve my presenting skills. As a Graphic Designer I would have to do a lot of pitching so its really important that I do.
I got some feedback from my tutors and they felt the design of my slides were a bit boring and as a Graphic Designer I should try and be a bit more creative with my presentation. I mentioned in my presentation that one of the weaknesses I have going into the Graphic Design profession is being a girl due to the fact that it seems to be a male dominated profession. My tutors suggested talking to female graphic designers.

Campaigning for Campagins!
Me and Fran were approached a while ago if we wanted to be campaigns officers because the SU have been impressed with our work for the Arts Party. As we don’t have anyone running against us we didn’t really have to campaign but we thought it would be good to anyway to let people know of our presence.
We have created this poster for our campaign.
We decided to create portraits of ourselves with Micheal Cera as we wanted to present ourselves as neutral/not aligned to any political parties and we felt Micheal Cera omits this message. We also used comic sans because it is a friendly, welcoming type.
During this week we are going to go around the college with blank t shirts and get students to write on us what they would like from us as campaigns officers.

Leeds Arts Party Roles
We have finally been allocated roles for the organisation of the Leeds Arts Party. Me and Fran have been given the task of holding a demo on the day of voting which is two days before the actual event. We also need to organise the community workshops that will be happening on the day.

Who Are You? Grayson Perry Pieces in the National Portrait Gallery
I went to see the piece that were in Grayson Perry’s recent ‘Who Are You?’ documentary. He had placed them within the National Portrait Gallery’s general collection. It was brilliant to see them up close, especially as all the pieces have so much detail to them which you don’t necessarily see on the TV. Theses were probably my favourite two:
Huhne Vase – I thought it very cleverly portrayed the man
The Jesus Army Money Box – just because I thought it was really well crafted.
He also added some extra pieces that weren’t included. Firstly was his map of days which I posted about earlier and was fantastic to see up close.
Secondly he also created a ‘Comfort Blanket’ of Britain
